Dies tat der Bekanntheit des „Fürsten“ allerdings keinen Abbruch. Seit dem sixteen. Jahrhundert scheiden sich prominente Geister an diesem Werk und bis heute ist der Ruf Machiavellist zu sein, einer Politikerkarriere durchaus abträglich . Für die einen, die Moralisten, ist Machiavelli ein „Lehrer des Bösen“( Leo Strauß), der rücksichtslose Machtpolitik samt Mord, Betrug und Heuchelei predigt oder doch zumindest in Kauf nimmt. Der „alte Fritz“ in seinen jungen Jahren als Kronprinz, sah sich gar genötigt , in seinem „Anti-Machiavel“ die Ideale des Humanismus gegen den „Unmenschen“ zu verteidigen, nur um dann als König seine Ratschläge zu befolgen . Die anderen, wie J. G. Fichte, verehren Niccolò Machiavelli als Vordenker der Staatsraison und als denjenigen , der die Politik von den antiken und mittelalterlichen Vorstellungen von Ethik und faith trennte und damit die empirische Wissenschaft von der Politik erst möglich machte. In dieser von Polemik bestimmten Atmosphäre nahmen nur wenige eine differenzierte place ein , indem sie den „Fürst“ in den historischen Kontext setzten, wobei wiederum die Frage aufkommen muß, ob und inwieweit Machiavellis Ratschläge noch aktuell sind. Die Ambivalenz des Themas wird in Marlowe´s Prolog zum „Juden von Malta“ recht deutlich, wo er Machiavelli über sich selbst sagen läßt: Es staunt mich an, wer mich am meisten haßt; Wenn guy auch offen meine Bücher schilt, Liest guy sie doch und kommt durch sie empor !
